How to Install Brass Threaded Inserts for Plastic Injection Molding? Step-by-step Guide

Brass Threaded Inserts are part of fasteners used to easily assemble and disassemble materials like wood, plastic, aluminium, rubber, etc. without causing any damage to components and thus improve their reusability.

Brass Threaded Insert Molding process can be carried out with the plastic molding materials like Thermoplastics, Thermosets, Elastomers. This process is also known as Thermal installation process of brass threaded inserts. Among various sizes, m3 threaded inserts are widely used.

Here we are going to discuss step-by-step method to install brass threaded inserts in Plastic Injection Moulding for applications like Automotive Parts, 3D Printing Parts, Home appliances Parts, Electrical parts, etc. These inserts are also known as Brass Heat Set Inserts

As shown in the image, measure the outermost diameter of the Insert and use that measurement to drill a Pilot hole in the Plastic material.

Drill a Pilot hole in the Plastic using appropriate drive tools. You can find the right drill size in the Brass Threaded Insert’s specifications.

Place the Brass threaded insert over the hole as shown in the image. Use the Soldering Iron to heat up the insert at 200°C temperature.

The lower grooves provides good pull out resistance,

The upper vertical knurling provides good torque out resistance.

Heat transfers take place from hot soldering iron to brass inserts and from brass insert to Plastic as Brass is a good conductor of heat. Now as shown in the image, push the heated insert in the hole with the help of soldering iron until the top part of the insert remains flush to the surface of the plastic.

This process can also be carried out using Plastic Injection Molding Machines for large production of the parts.

If required, softly polish the surface with a Flat File tool to remove excess melted plastic at the top of the surface where inserts are installed.
